We Can Choose to Be Led to Peaceful Streams

October 23, 2020

choose to allow ourselves to be led to peaceful streams.

A deep thirst, have you had one? Not the type you get when you work out. I’m thinking about the vague feeling of not being able to settle. I turn the tv on, but I’m still restless.  Check social media, nope. But there is an answer. We can choose to allow ourselves to be led to peaceful streams. And drink the water that satisfies like none other. I have turned over a lot of rocks in my quest to feel at peace. I’ve tried different relaxation techniques, working hard, striving to please people, and new hobbies. It’s funny, but all that time, effort, and money, with no lasting results. But the answer is right here. Embedded In one of the first Bible verses I memorized. The 23rd ... read more

How to be overwhelmed by God instead of your circumstances

how to be overwhelmed by God instead of your circumstances

Honestly, it’s almost hard not to be overwhelmed some days. Do you feel like that? Too much conflict over politics, strife in your family, or at work? Safe places seem in short supply. But what if you could learn how to be overwhelmed by God instead of your circumstances? You can! When I dropped our youngest son off to begin his new life, far from our home, I was almost immobilized with sadness and fear. I sat in the car, alone in quiet of the early morning. The subzero temperatures of March slowly filled the car as hot salty tears coursed down my cheeks. Tears that I had not wanted Tim to see. A million memories and thoughts galloped through my mind. Fighting against every ... read more

Negotiate Successfully Through the Fog of Your Challenge.

October 10, 2020

you can negotiate successfully through the fog of your challenge.

The fog hung heavily in the air. The dense white air blurred everything but a few feet in front of my car. I proceeded cautiously along the one-lane road, paying close attention to the reflectors embedded in the pavement. Sometimes life can feel like that, can’t it when you are struggling to make difficult decisions. But you can negotiate successfully through the fog of your challenge. What happened next, on that trip, prompted me to think about how to get through a foggy challenge successfully.   The Danger of Navigating in the Fog Red lights glowed through the fog, slowing my speed even more. I noticed a brave firefighter, barely visible standing in the roadway directing ... read more

How Can I Walk into God’s Promises Starting Right Now?

How Can I Walk Into God's Promises Starting Right Now?

Have you seen this? A small child stands at the top of the slide, knowing the fun that awaits him, but afraid to take the next step. But the joy radiating from him as the risk is taken is dazzling. Like him, I stand at the threshold of a new experience and yet am holding back. Maybe that is you as well. How can I walk into God’s promises starting right now? Maybe your promise is for a restored relationship with a friend, or family member. Or perhaps a promise of peace during a financial problem, or a work situation. For me, it’s a promise of God’s presence as I step into a new opportunity. Where do even start? How do we let go of our fears and step into God’s promises? Letting ... read more

Free to Leave it All Behind, Right Now

September 24, 2020

free to leave it all behind.

I slammed the phone down on the table and walked away, frustration seething inside me. A broken piece of office equipment, dead before its time! Minutes later, however, I was more disappointed in myself than the unresponsive printer. I had allowed myself to be drawn into a vortex of negative thoughts - again. But then I realized something that is true, not just for me.  We are free to leave it all behind.   Free to Start Again Free to begin again, to have a fresh start. Do you ever feel like I did? You find yourself in a messy situation that you do not like. Because you have reacted according to an old script? But, I can choose to walk away from following old patterns ... read more

What If It’s Not Rejection, but God’s Protection?

September 17, 2020

What if it's not rejection, but God's Protection.

I walked slowly to the car, the dark parking lot echoing my mood. Behind me, light spilled from the church hall. The sound of laughter haunted me as I slid into the car. My loneliness grew a little deeper as I closed the door. Why was this happening? But I now know the question I should have asked. What if it's not rejection, but God's protection. I attended the women’s event hoping to make friends in our new church.  But my efforts at talking with people failed miserably.  I was greeted by polite brief responses followed by the person’s rapid retreat. My face burned with the shame of rejection. This was not the antidote to loneliness I expected.   A tropical storm is ... read more

You Are More Than Welcome Here

September 10, 2020

In the middle of a long road trip, desperate for coffee, I stumbled into a McDonald’s, never anticipating what would happen. Conversation stopped, heads turned, and eyes locked on me with laser focus. The message screamed: I was not welcome in this small-town gathering spot. Have you felt like that – unwelcomed, or even unwanted? The truth is you are more than welcome here. More Than Welcomed – From Before the Beginning Our earthly families, friends, colleagues, or even strangers may make us feel unwelcome. But God chose us before the foundations of the world. I admit this truth is so astounding it’s taking me time to understand. These verses explain what I mean: “Long ... read more

Navigate Safely as Life changes From Peaceful to Perilous

Navigate life changes from peace to peril

My grip on the steering wheel tightened as my stomach churned. The lightly falling snow had transformed into a blizzard within 15 minutes. Would you like to navigate safely as life changes from peaceful to perilous? Have you experienced a radical change in your life? Sudden complete and unexpected changes. Maybe, an illness, job loss, hurricane, or even a pandemic.  The Journey to Navigate Life Changes Safely From Peaceful to Perilous Begins I found it is possible to navigate safely from peaceful to perilous events. (And arrive back at peace.) Well, back to my story. Alone in the car, I exhaled. Deliberately relaxing my shoulders, I eased my hunched back into the ... read more

Make Room for God to Work

August 16, 2020

The enormity of the situation consumed my mind. The shadow it cast extinguished all light.  I lay on the bed engulfed by complete darkness. In the quiet, I realized it was time to make room for God to work. My teenaged son had just called in the middle of the night, he needed help. His car was nearly out of gas, and the gas station was closed. The pumps did not take debit cards. He asked me to drive to Connecticut to help. But he had forgotten, instead of 60 miles away, I was 1,600 miles away – with his younger brother. I could not rescue him. 2 Kings 4:1-7 gives us a model of what to do in a situation that defies our physical resources. The unnamed widow’s situation, described ... read more

Four Steps to Enrich Your Spiritual Resources

August 9, 2020

One thing the last few months has taught me is that major change can come quickly and with little warning. I have been through a lot of change before this – and I am sure you have too. But this one has made me consider how can I best prepare for unwanted change, spiritually. So, here are four steps to enrich your spiritual resources. We have lived in several places that are the home to “active weather” seasons. Focusing on both what our needs would be at the time of the storm and for a short while after we planned and prepared. We had a way to gather, and we had a safe place to shelter. Supplies were placed in water-resistant containers. Everyone knew where they were – they were ... read more
