Help for Staying on Track in Your Daily Life

October 21, 2019

Do you ever hear the same message several times, from different sources, within a short period? When I do, I pay attention. Invariably the message makes a positive difference in my life. This time it was about staying on course when surrounded by distraction. What I learned might help you too.

Recently, while I was waiting to board a small plane, I heard a surprising announcement. It was my first message.

The airline representative lightheartedly beseeched us to be careful boarding. Over the loudspeaker, she instructed us, “When you get outside, do not go under barricades or around lines. Stay on your pathway. There are 3 planes parked close together. They look the same, but they are all going to different cities”.

I chuckled along with everyone else. I imagined people getting off the plane shaking their heads in bewilderment when they arrived at the wrong airport.

This has happened to me too. No, not getting on the wrong plane. But by getting completely sidetracked while working on an assignment, causing it to change into one vastly different than the one God had for me. Maybe you have too?

I followed the instructions and got on the right plane. During the two-hour flight, I pondered what I heard.

I realized sometimes I get caught up in generating ideas for the project. Fueled with energy from this enjoyable process I often forget to check in with the One whose plan it is.

Before I know it, I have become completely sidetracked. I have arrived where I did not want to be. The destination, or finished product, maybe far from what God planned.

I may not hear announcements explaining how to stay on course in my everyday life. But God lovingly beckons me to follow Him. He beckons you too.

This verse explains one way He calls to us:

“Your own ears will hear him.
Right behind you a voice will say,
“This is the way you should go,”
whether to the right or to the left.”

Isaiah 30:21 New Living Translation (NLT)

Our loving God wants to help me and you too. By traveling one guided step at a time I will complete His work. I will end up exactly where He wants.

I sat back and enjoyed the rest of the flight. Little did I know, the messages were not over.

My second message arrived when I was waiting to leave the plane in Toronto. My visit with my son would begin, I could hardly wait.

I heard: “Please stay on the freshly painted green pathway when you exit the plane. This will lead you safely into the terminal.” Once down the narrow portable steps, I appreciated the warning.

I emerged into a sensory overload zone. Multiple planes, foodservice, and luggage trucks surrounded us. Their engine noises overlaid with employees shouting directions. The air was heavy with jet fuel.

It was distracting! People who turned to look at their surroundings strayed off course. But, by keeping my eyes on the green pathway I arrived inside without incident.

The warning and situation grabbed my attention. As someone who is easily distracted, I know how my thoughts can wander away from what I am doing. Just like meandering off the green pathway. Maybe yours do too.

I was convinced this second message was important to understand. This is what I came up with:

Like the airport, there is often a lot of competing noise going on in the background when I am working. Experts giving instructions on how to be more effective or efficient. Recommendations abound on what to read or who to talk to for the best advice.

I can also get distracted by shiny things. Like the success of others, recognition, or financial rewards.

It can be hard to focus and stay on track.

You may know this feeling from your work; paid or volunteer. Or perhaps when you are caring for your children or older parents.

This verse offers advice I will listen to:

“5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take
.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 New Living Translation (NLT)

As I move forward I plan to act on this wisdom. I will:

  • Trust the LORD completely.
  • Depend on His wisdom, not mine.
  • Pray for understanding of what He wants.
  • Remember He will show me what to do.
  • Focus on His path, not what is going on around me.
  • Follow His directions.

I smile as I write this. God got my attention in two very creative ways! He likely tried before, but I was too distracted to hear.

I am making progress in applying these ideas. Sometimes I forget. But God is not surprised. He lovingly prompts my memory.

He will do the same for you too.
